Focus On Life 52 Photos - Week 7 ~ The Beauty of Flowers

The Earth laughs in flowers. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sally's prompt for us this week was~
"A single flower with it's beauty has the ability to lift our spirits and bring a sense of happiness to our souls. The sheer sight of flowers can evoke feelings of excitement, positivity and enhance our well being.
This week take a moment to bring a little happiness to your soul and enhance your well being.
Take a moment to enjoy the beauty of flowers."

I took these shots right before we left Florida to come home. They are of the purple passion flower vine that we planted along the fence behind our house about 10 months ago.
The vine has spanned the width of our property in that time  and you can tell by the tightness of the tendrils, it is a serious climber!
The blooms remind me of some underwater sea creature, as if it could just swim right away into that deep blue sky there.

I want you to know that these are not post processed in any way other than applying a frame to them and this first one is slightly cropped. The colors are that vivid.

The outermost petals remind me a little of an upside down water lily.

Seeing as how we are having a very cold rain right now which is supposed to turn to sleet and snow as the day and night wear on, the sight of these flowers and that beautiful blue sky really do brighten my day today!

Go enjoy a walk through the virtual garden at The Studio Sublime and see what everyone has picked this week!

I Heart Macro - Angels and Demons and Aliens Oh My!

Angels~
Can you see the face of the angel and the wings in the water droplet?
You can click on any picture to enlarge and then click on it again for a super huge view

I took many pictures around the yard this morning, there was a heavy dew quenching all the plants and flowers from an easterly wind off the ocean.

Demons~
These are the red flowers of the Lucifer's tongue plant

Aliens~
Thse are hibiscus buds getting ready to bloom

But they look more like pods of aliens getting ready to hatch
Oh My~
This little guy was buzzing around me vying for my attention and then he posed oh so pretty

This has the texture of an alien surface but is the dew kissed petals of the Asiatic lillies which are in full bloom right now, and oh the beautiful scent they have!

Mr. Ant out for a morning stroll

The daylillies continue to add color and beauty to the garden.

Won't you join us over at Studio Waterstone for I heart Macro Sunday's?

I Heart Macro and Sunday Mornings

It's that time of the week again- Time for some Macro Love!

I went out in the yard this morning, camera in hand, to take in the early morning sights and beauty.
I have 4 hummingbird feeders and watching them fly around is like watching a symphony in motion!
There was a nice ruby throated hummingbird here but he got a little camera shy. This one however wanted breakfast no matter who was watching!

OK now you're starting to  Piss.Me.Off!

Not to be outdone, this dragonfly flew in and landed just as I snapped the pix of the hydrangeas in bloom. You can barely see his wings moving as he flew in.

Sunbathing

The daylillies are starting to bloom all around the garden.
I love daylillies!
Each one with their spectacular painted colors, all different.

There is a daylily farm here on the shore, Sterrett Gardens, about 45 minutes south of me, that i try to get to each year to add to the collection.
They give you a checklist and you can walk the fields looking at all the varieties in bloom, make your list and then return to the gazebo where they check you out and then go dig the varieties you have chosen.
They also ship and have a wonderful website.

This frog is a little skittish, I can only get so close before he jumps and hides but he has been livingin our little pond out front all summer so far so he must eat well here too!

I have been waiting for the rest of the birds to hatch out and leave the nests so that i can trim the bushes without anyone freaking out. Looks like i'll be trimming soon!
Head on over to Lori's and join in the macro love this beautiful Sunday!

Mothers Day Flowers ~ I Heart Macro

I don't think it's any small coincidence that the most beautiful of flowers bloom around Mother's Day.

As I walked around the yard taking pictures for I heart macro, focusing on the smallest of details, I was reminded of just how much beauty there is in every thing in nature.

How the simplest of things can make us pause and reflect on what is most important to us.

How in the busiest hours of our day we might walk right past and miss so much beauty and elegance.

Miss the peace and stillness.

Miss the miracles.

Miss a whole world

It slowed me down

Helped me to really see

And appreciate

And drink in all the beauty

And warmth

All of God's gifts

Each one individual

And spectacular

Happy Mother's Day
With much Love and Appreciation

Buds, Blooms and Butterflies

The past 2 weeks have been a flurry of activity around here.
Our granddaughter was born with a hemangioma on her bottom lip.  In her first year they performed laser surgery on it to destroy the blood vessels feeding it knowing she would face surgery at around 5 years of age to remove it entirely. Well, as kids go, she became aware of it and started to bite at it making it worse lately so the Drs. decided to go ahead and do it now. My daughter took her across the bay to Kings Daughters hospital in Norfolk,  while my son in law stayed home with our grandsons, for what was to be simple outpatient surgery. Well  2 days and 3 surgeries later they both came home safe and sound.  Our granddaughter came straight here to stay with us while her parents worked and to help the healing process away from the rough and tumble of 2 brothers.
So first up on our best buds agenda was a trip to Michaels for some new craft supplies. She picked out spring sticker books and a huge pack of cardstock with every imaginable color for the purpose of playing with the new toy making flowers to paste and color creating a paper garden.
Then of course there was the paints we had to have in her favorite colors and apparently 35 pairs of shape scissors is not enough, we need the pink ones.

We successfully kept the stitches intact and healing for 5 days before she went back home.
One of the MANY books we read is an old family favorite which i read to my children when they were young, Thundercake. We had a perfect day and storm to read it in and she wanted to make the cake, the recipe of which was in the back of the book.  We had just the pan to bake it in too!

We went out and took pictures around the yard with our cameras of all the spring flowers.

Our flowering magnolia has the most blooms on it this year.

There's just something about loads of pink blooms against a  green background that screams "SPRING IS HERE"

After she went home, I have to admit i did nothing for about a day and a half.
But this past week my husband and i started working on the garden and one thing led to another and before you know it we had 32 new blueberry and raspberry bushes planted at the far corner of our yard.
The raised beds need to be rebuilt as they have settled but we decided we will get one more year out of them before tackling that job.

I have become a fan of raised bed and container gardening over the past several years and this year have planted a few with strawberries that don't have lots of runners to see how they do. I also planted lavender in the smaller pots.

In what used to be the sandbox when the kids were younger we used to have an herb garden, but it was getting overgrown and we decided to remove the plants, refresh the bed and plant strawberry plants. I put about 60 in there this week. .

The containers got severely damaged last winter with the ice and snow banked around them. We have never had that happen before and I think i will try to get some galvanized pans from the farm center to place underneath to be able to salvage them this year. They too have a few strawberries in them. Then we built a new bed between the purple martin house poles and planted blackeyed peas and 2 varieties of green beans. We covered the beds with screening just until the seeds get a good start and to keep any stray animals out.

These pots have sugar snap peas and snow peas, a favorite of ours. I decided a few years ago to try them in pots with large tomato cages as the trellis and they work great. The grandkids come over and pick them and eat them on their way to the pool all summer!
The bed behind them is all iris and daylillies.
Now all we need is some sunshine and warmer weather!
And rest.
